The 1947 Partition Archive We are a crowdsourced community-based archive that trains and empowers you to document, preserve and share oral histories of Partition witnesses in your community. Explore the map above for stories you have helped preserved. We are you. We are citizens from all walks of life dedicated to documenting the people’s history of the 1947 Partition since 2010. The year 1947 marked the end of British Raj in South Asia and the formation of modern India, Pakistan and (since 1971) Bangladesh, via the Partition of Punjab and Bengal, a globally disruptive event that created one of the largest mass refugee crises of the last century. Together we have ensured this history won’t be forgotten by recording nearly 11,500 witness oral histories from 16 countries in over 40 languages and dialects, including digital copies of antiquated photographs, documents and images of personal objects of historical value, gathered from personal collections.
